Piave, Grappa e Montello
Montello
Presentation:
Between 1917 and 1918, the Austro-Hungarian Empire tried in numerous ways to bring the conflict on the Italian front to a rapid close.
Several diplomatic missions to the adversary nations and the Vatican were unsuccessful and the Oberkommando decided to order a strong decisive action using all of the technical and logistical resources that remained at the disposal of the army. A strong offensive was organized with, according to historians, the objective of breaking through the Italian lines in several points at a distance from one another, thereby limiting the ability of the army to concentrate on areas where there were signs of success. Between the 15th and the 23rd of June 1918 the imperial troops attacked the Italian battle lines between Asiago and the sea with valour and self-sacrifice and succeeded in deeply penetrating the Montello, placing the stability of the Italian front in serious difficulties.
The response of the Royal army was initially confused, but after a few hours the Supreme commander found the correct defensive axis and was able to halt and thereby repel the Austro-Hungarian soldiers across the Piave. This was to be the last offensive of the Hapsburg Empire: the following months heralded the disintegration of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the end of an epoch.
