The great War
Presentation:
During the second half of 1918, the dramatic social, alimentary and economic situation of the central powers gave rise to the idea that the conflict would soon be at an end: the Italian government pressured the Supreme Command until the army assumed an offensive phase and sought to regain the territorial losses suffered with the withdrawal of Caporetto.
A plan was elaborated that foresaw the heavy commitment of the adversary on the mountain front and the simultaneous forcing of the middle Piave in three points, with advance orders converging on Vittorio Veneto.
The most southerly action, opposite the isle of Papadopoli, was anticipated by a number of days to rally the formations facing the Austro-Hungarian front line. Between the 26th and the 27th of October the first troops were positioned on the left bank in front of Pederobba and took Falzè di Piave.
The situation became critical due to the difficulty in holding the bridges, which were destroyed by the artillery several times, and the current swollen by the rains: on the 28th the army successfully crossed the natural obstacle and the campaign developed with speed, with the adversary demonstrating increasing signs of organizational decline.
On the 30th of October, Vittorio Veneto was reached and the pursuit continued along the alpine valleys and towards the sea of Trieste.
