The great War
Piave
Presentazione:
Few places have an evocative power such as the banks of the Piave. Walking along one of the bridges that cross the river, the signs of the collective memory are impressed upon the visitor: the plaques with the fateful phrase “Fiume sacro alla Patria” , the flag that always waves close by, the names of the locations and the areas that frequently specify “of the battle”
The three great battles that were fought between the two banks (the battle of arresto, November 1917; the battle of the Solstice, June 1918; the battle of Vittorio Veneto, October 1918) all have the river as an unintentional protagonist, which was more energetic and rich in water at the time.
The resources of the Austro-Hungarians were exhausted on the river and the fortunes of the Royal army and the allies were reconstructed: millions of men looked across to the other bank knowing that sooner or later they would have to come face to face with this force of nature alongside the cruelty of men.
