The Italian lines can be found opposing the Austro-Hungarian positions which, from Lozze, climb up north to the peak of Caldiera and to the front of the promontory of Campanaro. Taken over by the alpine troops during the Italian counteroffensive, between the summer of 1926 and the fall of 1917, the entire area was strongly fortified becoming an important advance guard position of the Italian back-up line until the line folding of November 1917. The system of trenches, track ways, caverns and barracks appear here to be even more impressive both for its extension and for its specific complexity as well as for the audacity of some of the works. Among these, we highlight the barrack complex of Pozzo della Scala, the castling road that from Lozze square goes up to the eastern slope of Caldiera up to the saddle found immediately beneath the peak, and the cave observatory, set-up on various levels and built in the summer of 1917 by the 19th comp. of the 5th regiment miners beneath the foresummit of Caldiera. The barrack complex of Pozzo della Scala and the truly intricate number of walkways and trenches that from Pozzo della Scala stretch out towards Campanaro are also of great interest as well as the overhanging Cima Caldiera and the observatory remains of Gen. Di Giorgio, commander of the IV alpine troop grouping during the battle of Ortigara.
Cima Caldiera
The defensive system was made by a main in rock trench and by the parallel elements with annexed walkways, rock excavated positions and cavern shelters located alongside the western slope of Caldiera, also including the ones that from Pozzo della Scala outcrop to the Campanaro salient.
