Forte Corbin

"The Highland forts"

Card
Fort Corbin (ex artillery battery converted into armored fort before the start of the war), built between 1906 and 1911, was mostly left inactive during the entire course of the war due to its considerable back position respect to the front line.

Originally armored with six 149 pieces placed on rotating steel domes, its canons were relocated in other premises and substituted with false wooden gun barrels.

The fort was bombarded on may 1916 at the start of the Strafexpedition and was occupied by the Austrian vanguards of the Kliemann group on 19:30 of May 1916, during the Strafexpedition.

Abandoned during the strategic pull-out on June 24th 1916, the fort was left as an Italian forward observation point, mainly for Cimone di Arsiero.

Privately owned, Corbin is certainly the best preserved fortress among the ones present on the Highland and represents a tourist attraction of hundreds of visitors.

Lately, thanks to the owners'intervention, an accurate activity aimed at restoring the mighty fort structure, which uniquely offers respect to the other Highland forts, a service of food and drink and a small but interesting museum.

The restoration activity should be definitely completed and coupled with further development of the building museum which was the command center and the guard-house.
