The Austrian logistic complex of Campo Gallina constitutes the natural compendium of the area of Ortigara.
Located at the feet of the western slopes of Mount Colombarone in the upper valley of Portule, the Campo Gallina basin became, indeed, after the retreat of the Austro-Hungarian troops at the end of the Strafexpedition (June 1916), one of the main logistic centers of the Austro-Hungarian 6a Div. set-up like a true small town equipped with a hospital, canteen, cinema, church, barracks, shelters and warehouses.
Inside the wide basin dominated by the imposing "monumento agli eroi" ("monument to the heros") the remains of the field hospital n. 1303 can still be noticed today, as well as the military cemetery and the base of a small church half-hidden between the valley lilies.
Furthermore, ascending along the road that leads to Bivio Italia, there are aqueduct tanks that from Renzola valley through Bocchetta di Portule, reached the Ortigara's overhands, the remains of the transitory station of the cableway n. 13 which came from the Piana di Vezzena and in the vicinity of the Division Command Post remains, it also reached the monument that recalls the commander of the 6a Div. - gen. A. E. von Mecenseffy - fallen on 10.06.1917 on the slopes of Corno di Campo Verde.
The particular area conformation and the significance of the material remains of the works accomplished during the conflict, make it a sort of a "small Pompei" of the Great War.
All of the area crossed by the Karlstrasse along which the Sentiero della Pace unwinds together with the trail Cai n. 830 allows an easy access from Larici as well as from the nearby Galmarara valley.
