Ortigara - Monte Lozze

"The battlefield"

Card
Important stronghold of the highest Italian resistance line, Mount Lozze acted as a great observatory point able to direct artillery shots against the Austrian positions of Ortigara and Campigoletti. In addition, the various main walkways, starting from Lozze, connected the advance lines of the Agnellizza valley and also connected Campiluzzi, further south, with the logistic backlines. Near the main peak, there is a small church which was built in the 1920s in memory of the fallen soldiers of the battle of Ortigara, a small charnel house and the Cecchin shelter (managed by the ANA section of Marostica), while on the overlooking summit, a column elevates in support of the statue of the Virgin Mary. The entire area still conserves evident remains of the defensive works built by the Italian troops between the summer of 1916 and the fall of 1917: of particular interest, on altitude 1959, the remains of the cavern position of the 13a mountain battery of the 2nd Regiment can still be visited.
