Forte Verena

"The forts of the Highland"

Card
Fort Verena is certainly the most known and mentioned fortress in the plentiful memoirs of the Great War.

Armored with four pieces of 149 placed on rotating domes, during the first days of the conflict was able to inflict heavy damage to the Austrian fortresses of the Vezzena lowland which were unable to return fire due to its high positioning.

On June 12th 1915 it was nonetheless knocked-out by a heavy grenade fired presumably from the Austrian posts on the Costa'Alta, that caused the death of 44 artillerymen.

The event had vast exposure on the national and international press at the time which induced the Italian Supreme Command to issue, on July 2nd 1915, the order to disarm the forts located within Austrian firing range.

The fort (and the mountain) was taken over by the Austrian troops on May 22nd 1916 among pyrotechnical celebrations made with light tracers.
Among the forts present on the Highland, it is however the one mostly degraded (also due to human action) even if located in an extraordinary setting of high scenic value; it was easily accessed thanks to the chair lift that from the underlying Verenetta refuge transports up to the peak of Mount Verena right beneath the fort's structures.

Ordinary maintenance would be therefore required.
