The great War
Outline of the place:
There are battle fields which lead one to reflection: thoughts abandon historical explanations as well as the spectacular dramatics of modern warfare, the narration of gestures and heroic acts and rest, instead, on the themes of destruction and death, suffering and the futility of war. The abbey of St. Eustachio is one such place, a monastic complex that has directed the religious and social life of the surrounding area for centuries. Smashed apsis, lacerated walls, walls that today only support clouds, is all that remains of the many stories and religious piety: the artillery of both of the armies descended on the complex and each army, during different phases of the battle of Piave, assisted in the destruction of the abbey.
Today, the ruins emerge from the luscious green of the surrounding woods and are a strong emotional reminder, enclosed in a very special silence.
