The great War

Outline of the place:
The British Expeditionary Force entered the war on the 4th of December 1917, when it became increasingly clear to all of the allies that the line of resistance on the Piave would resist the offensive of the Austro-Hungarians.
From this date, operations along the Piave saw the frequent use of Anglo Saxon divisions that suffered numerous losses, particularly during the conclusive phase of the conflict.
The military cemetery of Giavera del Montello houses hundreds of tombs, each of which is identified by a plaque on which the names and dates of the fallen soldier are shown as well as the coat of arms of the regiment to which they belonged. Most of the memorial stones have heart-rending phrases incised on them, directly dictated by family members.
Not to be missed:
Giavera del Montello / Cippo Gen. Pennella.
Located close to a deep doline popularly known as the “the valley of the dead” due to the sheer quantity of remains that were found here at the end of the conflict, an evocative monument holds a bronze bust of General Pennella, Commander of the VIIIth Italian army during the dramatic days of the battle of the Solstice. The nearby piece of artillery continues to point in the direction from which the attacking adversaries troops arrived.
