Places and regions / Bridge boats / Nervesa della Battaglia
The great War

Outline of the place:
Fighting along the banks of a river means crossing it each time the army is on the offensive: all of the armies lined up along the Piave crossed the river in varying turns.
Boats, pontoons, footbridges and equipment bridges were the basic instruments used to attack the adversary’s positions, and the Italian Generals and the Austro-Hungarian pioneers sacrificed themselves in hundreds in their terrible duty to open the road for their companions.
The bridge boats were composed of three floating elements connected to one another and held by strong ropes attached to large metal anchors.
One of these elements was drawn from the river and shows visible signs of the hail of shrapnel and bullets that fell in the first attempts to cross the river.
Not to be missed:
Nervesa della Battaglia / Monument to the Artillery.
Close to the ancient river port of Nervesa, a bronze monument inspired by a famous illustration has been placed: a cannon broken by the adversaries shots (in the illustration this is represented encircled by heroic and sacrificed officials and soldiers). The images, originally produced to emphasize the desperate resistance on the Isonzo immediately after Caporetto has, over time, become an icon of the Montellian battles, so much so as to become a monument to the courage of the Italian artillery.
