Bellunesi Dolomites

Loading map

The province of Belluno was on the front line from the first days of the conflict. The areas of Cadore and Agordino bordered on Cortina, Colle Santa Lucia and Livinallongo-Fodom, which were at that time part of Austria's South Tyrol.
The Bellunesi Dolomites were the site of a “war within a war” between 1915 and 1917, of a special character never seen before or since: a war that deeply affected these mountains and whose traces can still be seen today.
Among many areas affected by the war around Belluno, some are considered more significant. In fact, After the Italians' limited conquests, these became unassailable fortresses. Among those were Monte Piana, Tofane, Lagazuoi, Sass de Stria, Settsass, Monte Sief, Col di Lana and Marmolada.
