The great War
Agordino
Outline of the place:
After the Kingdom of Italy had sought to close the main access routes to the Agordo basin through the Cereda and Forcella Aurine passes and fortify the gorges of Listolade and San Martino at the end of the 1800s, a complex articulated blocking line was pursued, connected to the nearby Brenta-Cismon and Fortezza-Cadore-Maè lines.

This defensive system, subsequently integrated into the Yellow Line (or line of maximum resistance in case of failure of the front), required the construction of cave emplacements, shelters, observation posts and access roads of considerable strategic and architectural importance. For the duration of the conflict and until the frantic days of the retreat from Caporetto, this system gradually grew, for example at Sella del Col dei Ciot, at Monte Zelo and Monte Valaraz, Forcella Folega and Forcella Moschesin; but it failed to adequately support the desperate defensive efforts of our troops retreating along the Boite, the Cordevole and the Maè.

Today the remains of artifacts, which in some cases were revisited during the Second World War, are easily reached by fairly easy walks from the towns on the valley floor. They make interesting destinations, and enable you to appreciate the era's strategic criteria and the dictates of the science of fortification.

GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION and AREA BOUNDARY
The area is part of the Municipalities of Agordo, Taibon, Rivamonte and La Valle, and the suggested routes mostly wind along the hills along the Cordevole, but sometimes for strategic and tactical reasons single buildings or risky military roads in the direction of Gosaldo (Col Piagher) or Zoldano (Forcella Moschesin) also make attractive destinations.
