The great War
Outline of the place:
A Dolomite area of incomparable beauty and wild splendor, a place to breathe deeply, which saw the terrible battles of Monte Piana (which with 14,000 dead became known as the Calvary of Cadore) contrasting with extraordinary feats of courage, more alpine than warlike, such as the one leading to the conquest of the Sentinella pass by the Alpine troops (the famous “Mascabroni”) of Capt. Giovanni Sala.

Events that left deep traces in the land, which still appears today like an open book suggesting entire villages, remains of emplacements in caves and outdoors, amazing roads and communication trenches dug into the rock, the way the incomparable Italian strategic path crossing the ledges and ridges of Monte Paterno culminates in the unique staircase of Collerena, entirely excavated on the vertical wall of the mountain.

And then the Three Peaks with the ledge – easily accessed – that crosses its base and leads your gaze to Monte Piana in front of you, which still has important ruins and traces of battles and clashes.

GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION and AREA BOUNDARY
It is an extremely large area covering the towns of Auronzo di Cadore, Dobbiaco and Sesto di Pusteria. From the famous panorama of Monte Piana (a tourist destination since the late 1800s) you pass to the enchanting vision of the Three Peaks emerging from a sea of rock, on which sail small Towers, pregnant with events and memories such as the Scarperi and Toblin towers. At their feet, the emerald sea of Monte Mattina that conceals the remains of a real city and – not far away – the long series of strongholds easily reached from Rifugio Locatelli/Innerkofler. The whole area offers a site of special and unique interest, enriched by historical/climbing tours of the Red Crag of Sesto and Cima Undici (Peak Eleven).
