Places and regions / Border Ridge - Passo Montecroce Comelico - Monte Peralba
The great War
Outline of the place:
A long ridge that leads in an ideal fashion to the Sappada mountains, with small peaks, but of great natural beauty that combines memories of a war perhaps lived in a “muted” fashion but marked by violent clashes and battles that nevertheless involved almost exclusively the first year of the conflict.

There are significant works everywhere: from the trenches and fortifications excavated from the red rocks and shale, to the dark pyramid of Col Quaterna with the observation post on top, to the splendid brick buildings of Monte Peralba and Monte Avanza before which uncoils the timeless route of Monte Lastoni.

They are modest peaks but of great historical impact, especially for their continuous lean towards the lands of old Tyrol in a succession of beautiful memories like the small cemetery saddle of Sella di Némes, or the names of the “king's bombardiers” scratched into the rocks of the Forcella dei Fortini at the foot of Monte Chiadénis.

GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION and AREA BOUNDARY
The area is spread between Alta Pusteria and Comelico as far as the territory of Sappada, reaching the lands of the Gail valley from which long ribbons of road wind to the top of the ridge. Amazing views lead the eye to the imposing Dolomites of Sesto and unimaginable views of the Three Peaks of Lavaredo. The whole area is served by endless mule tracks and military roads, which – however long – nevertheless bring ease of access and travel.
