Places and regions / Lagazuoi - 5 Torri - Sass di Stria
The great War
Outline of the place:
During the twenty-nine long months from May 1915 to October 1917, Sasso di Stria and Piccolo Lagazuoi were important bulwarks that blocked the Falzarego pass and the lower Valparola pass. They were viciously fought over by the opposing armies, who did not hesitate to torture their depths with defensive caves, mine tunnels and artillery emplacements.

And if the Sasso di Stria was excavated for the deep shafts of the Goiginger tunnel (one of the most interesting works of this part of the front), the Piccolo Lagazuoi was crossed by winding excavations in the mine tunnels, works that showed their best in the extraordinary hanging village of the famous Martini Ledge. It contrasts with the lower-lying "Vonbank emplacement" at the foot of the mountain, with its six strong lines of barbed wire. Just below the pass, to protect the Costeana valley and the few conquests made at the beginning of the conflict, the Italians found their main salient in the "Five Towers" crossed by a second and a third line of defense.

Today these areas are home to three significant open-air museums that show realistic views of life on the front at high altitude. After an appropriate restoration the Great War Museum, in the fort of the Tre Sassi at Valparola Pass, displays weapons and equipment of the soldiers and the fort, in addition to objects in common use on the Dolomite front.

GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION and AREA BOUNDARY
The area stretches between the towns of Cortina d'Ampezzo and Livinallongo del Col di Lana. Both the Piccolo Lagazuoi and the Sasso di Stria are part of the Fánis group, behind which opens the wild and hard-fought Travenànzes valley: one of many doors to break through from the Italian side to reach the Tyrol. The Five Towers, however, are a group in themselves, isolated in a sea of green and culminating in the 2361-meter Great Tower (Torre Grande), before which the golden cliffs of Monte Averau and Monte Nuvolau come to life on which Italian artillery observation posts were placed during the conflict.
