The great War
Outline of the place:
During 1918, the Minatori Gavotti unit (Engineering corps) created a subterranean fortress that ran for 5 kilometers and was intended to resist a prolonged onslaught by the enemy.
Cannon batteries, some of which are still in position today, and machine gun pits crowned the main structure from which the flanks of the adversaries’ lines could be easily shelled and, through disguised passageways, even enable troops to reach the rear of the front line.
Equipped with independent logistical services (generators, aqueducts, deposits, first aid posts, communication centers, observatories, etc.) the Vittorio Emanuele gallery represented the most modern interpretation of a “fort” during this period and played a central role in all of the operations carried out on the massif.
