The great War
Italian Military Shrine
Outline of the place:
The Italian Military Shrine inaugurated in 1935 impresses the visitor with its unusual structure - a series of concentric circles open to the south endeavoring to visually relate the plain, ferociously defended for one year, with the memory of the fallen defenders.
The emotional and harrowing list of names and burial niches gives way to the tomb of General Giardino, who asked to be buried “amongst my soldiers”, fully aware of the enormous sacrifice of life and terrible suffering that he was forced to ask of his young fighters. Our Lady of Grappa, already an object of devotion before the conflict, is located in the summit chapel.
The “Via Eroica” (heroic road) winds towards the north, carved with the names of the main peaks of the massif brutally involved in the war. Immediately thereafter, one comes upon the Austrian shrine that holds the remains of approximately 10,000 fallen soldiers amongst which the moving burial niche of the Peter Pan soldier is the most poignant.
